The winner of Stratford Business Association’s Capture the Heart of Taranaki photography competition was announced in Prospero Place, Stratford, on Saturday.
The competition was designed to encourage people to look at the Stratford District as the wonder it is, says Raewyn Gordon for the Business Association. “Sometimes when you travel to and from work each day, you stop noticing the beauty all around you. The Capture the Heart of Taranaki competition was a success in that people started to look anew at the splendour of the Stratford District.”

Winner of the competition, Hannah Topless, took a photo of the sculpture of Shakespeare in Prospero Place. The uniqueness of the shot is the sunlight shining down through a perfectly blue sky to illuminate Shakespeare’s head with a kind of halo.

The second prize shot was taken looking up at Stratford’s bell tower, in such a way that it seems to be leaning over the viewer.

All photos were taken using disposable cameras, and all were developed by the Business Association to ensure that no post-production editing would influence the photos. Judges from the Stratford Camera Club singled out 30 special photos from over 1,300 snapshots.

The final 30 shots can be viewed in the calendar the Business Association has produced, available at the Information Centre for only $15. Raewyn says “the unique photos in this calendar make it a perfect Christmas present for friends and family.”
