Free Buses To Cheer Christmas
A ‘fare free’ day on the buses on Saturday 20 December is a big “Merry Kirihimete” from Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and will help take the transport stress out of last minute Christmas shopping. All the normal Saturday public bus services around Hastings and Napier will be free to passengers.
Carol Gilbertson, Passenger Transport Manager says, “Leave the car at home, relax and enjoy the ride while you save petrol and parking money - the extra money will certainly come in useful at this time of the year. You could even use the free bus day to visit friends and family before Christmas, or take the kids to the pool or the beach.”
There is also good news for bus passengers in the New Year with changes starting 2 February 2009. The Regional Transport Committee recently endorsed changes to the fare and zone structure making it cheaper to travel between our two cities. Brand new, super low floor buses will be used on all routes.
“It’s very good news that the adult fare for a trip between Napier and Hastings will drop from $5.70 to $4.50. And although some single fares will rise by up to 60 cents, the fare structure hasn’t changed since 2005,” says Councillor Alan Dick, Chair of the Committee.
“The old 10-trip tickets are being phased out in favour of Smartcards. Passengers who use the Smartcards will see even bigger gains – especially tertiary students, beneficiaries and disabled people who can save a massive $13.40. SuperGold card holders are now travelling free at off-peak times, so it’s a very good time to be taking the bus,” says Cr Dick.
The zone structure will be reduced from four zones to two, making it easier for passengers and bus drivers. Hastings, Havelock North, Flaxmere, EIT and Taradale Shops will be in one zone; Napier, Tamatea, Taradale Shops and EIT will be in another zone.
Special consideration has been given to ensure that EIT students only pay a one zone fare regardless of where they get on the bus.
