Manukau residents are being reminded to take care when visiting houses with Christmas lights.

The council wants to avoid any accidents involving cars or pedestrians visiting properties with Christmas lights. Last year there was a fatal accident on Chapel Road in Howick outside a house that is a popular Christmas light attraction.

Manukau City Council Transport Portfolio Leader, Councillor David Collings says the decorated properties are a great attraction for families during the festive season.

“But sometimes people get sidetracked and don’t make sure they’re being safe when crossing the road or driving past a Christmas light house.

“The last thing we want is a repeat of the accident last year. A few basic precautions should mean everyone can continue to share in the joy of Christmas.

“Park carefully and sensibly. Parking on a busy arterial road can be a problem, so it’s best to be prepared to walk a little distance from a safer parking spot and remember to watch for traffic at all times.

“Drivers are also encouraged to reduce their speed and take care when they’re in areas that are busy.

“The council and police have put some measures in place, like traffic management plans, but the best way to avoid any accidents that could ruin Christmas is for pedestrians and motorists to think about their safety.

“Don’t be distracted and make sure you take care. Then we’ll all have a safe and happy Christmas,” says Cr Collings.
