Fitzroy Wetland Taking Shape
Excavation has begun in Peringa Park as a wetland for Fitzroy starts to take shape.
Contractors are digging out the area, and also constructing boardwalks so the public can get close to the wetland environment once it is established.
“The excavation will be completed by Christmas and the boardwalks will be built by the end of January,” says Manager Projects Team Jeff Bondy.
“The wetland itself will be planted out in autumn.”
When the wetland is established, stormwater from Fitzroy will be directed into the wetland for cleaning before it reaches the lake.
A unique feature will be a large floating wetland on the main pond.
“Wetlands are natural filters, and Lake Rotomanu will benefit from having the stormwater sediments trapped in the wetland’s soil and plants. The wetland should also encourage wildlife, such as native birds, to take up residence over the years,” says Mr Bondy.
