Skins and Atomic sponsored athletes feature in Halberg Award nominations

Skins and Atomic sponsored athletes and organisations feature strongly in the 53 nominations being considered for the 2008 Halberg Awards announced last week.

The Halberg Trust Awards pay tribute to outstanding achievement by New Zealanders in sport.

Skins NZ sponsored individuals, double Olympic medallist cyclist Hayden Roulston and inline skater and roller sport world champion Nicole Begg, have been nominated along with a number of athletes from Bike NZ and Rowing NZ teams – both organisations are sponsored by Skins NZ.

“This is fantastic recognition for our sponsored athletes and organisations,” Brandex Adventure Sports, which imports Skins, Outdoor Director David Watt said.

“We work hard on aligning ourselves with athletes that represent the values of the brands we work with, and seeing them succeed on the world stage and recognised as New Zealanders makes us feel truly proud.”

Brandex also import Atomic Skis into New Zealand and Atomic sponsored skier, Winter X Games silver medallist and New Zealand's top ranked free skier Jossi Wells, has been nominated for the emerging talent Halberg Trust award which offers a $25,000 scholarship to the winner.

Wells is having to fly back from competing in North America, where he recently finished second in a Winter Dew Tour slopestyle event in Colorado, to attend the awards evening.

Every year nominations are called for by the trust from all national sporting bodies and a voting academy determines four finalists in the sportsman, sportswoman and sports team categories.
The Halberg Award winners are announced at an awards dinner in Auckland on February 3.

There were 19 nominations for the sportsman category, 12 for sportswoman, 12 in the team category and 10 nominations for coach of the year.
