A truck accident just north of Tirau this morning does not appear to have caused any harm to the environment, Environment Waikato says.

The freight truck, which rolled on SH1 in the early hours of this morning, was carrying general freight, including hazardous materials.

Environment Waikato resource use programme manager David Stagg said there had been some spillage from burst packs of engine oil onto the roadside.

“However the oil has been contained and absorbent materials have been used to clean it up, so there has been no run-off into waterways,” he said.

“The truck was also carrying a relatively small quantity of pesticides, but the chemicals have remained intact in their containers and have not spilled into the environment.”

Contractors are currently cleaning up the area and Environment Waikato staff will remain at the scene until the truck is righted as a precautionary measure.
