There has been much talk about climate change in recent months, with media coverage of the topic widespread. As far as public opinion goes, it seems the issues are well understood, with attention now focussed more on solutions.

One innovative solution-based programme was unveiled at Boomrock Lodge recently. The Hubbards Carbon Crusade offers people the opportunity to walk or run 13-15km around an off-road course, and plant four native trees each in a designated planting area along the way. The events will be held near Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch during September and October this year, coinciding with favourable spring planting conditions.

“This is about giving everyday people the opportunity to get their hands dirty and make a positive contribution to the fight against climate change” said Callum Anderson, Event Director. “We want to offer people the chance to offset their own carbon footprint by planting trees, and also to help educate and encourage people to minimise their impact on our planet. Each participant will plant four trees, in locations with spectacular scenery that most people don’t usually have access to. Combined with a 13-15km walk or run, we hope people will have a unique and rewarding experience that will benefit our planet.” Anderson estimates the planting of over 16,000 native trees this year, with that number likely to double with more events in 2008.

According to Anderson, research showed that most people are aware of climate change issues and are keen to address their individual contribution to climate change, but beyond recycling and turning light switches off, they lacked other practical options as to how they could mitigate the effects of their personal Carbon footprint.

“The response from industry was amazing. Hubbard Foods, our Principal Sponsor, has been a leader in socially responsible business, and their support for the Carbon Crusade is another example of this,” said Anderson. Other Corporates backing the Crusade include Suzuki, Bank of New Zealand, MoreFM, Boomrock, Hirequip, AMP Capital and Grove Mill Wines, who recently became the world’s first CarboNZero winery.

Doug Paulin, CEO for Hubbard Foods, says the Carbon Crusade movement is in line with a number of values that Hubbards are committed to, including caring for the environment and active lifestyles. “One aspect that appealed to Hubbards is the fact that the Carbon Crusade is based on providing all of us the opportunity to take positive action by getting our hands dirty” he said.

Boomrock is the home of Papanui Station, where the Wellington Carbon Crusade event will be held on October 6th. Significantly, areas of Papanui Station were covered in Totara forests before the land was cleared for farming last century. Jonny Eastwick, owner of Boomrock Lodge and Papanui Station, jumped at the chance to support the Hubbards Carbon Crusade. “As soon as I saw the concept, I loved it. It seemed right for us to go full circle and give back to the land which was once covered in natives,” said Eastwick.

The Hubbards Carbon Crusade is by no means the answer to climate change, but true to its tagline is about clearing the air one step at a time. Literally.
