Grabaseat is to hold its biggest recession-buster auction yet tomorrow, with more than 350 seats to Air New Zealand’s 23 international destinations on sale with a $1 reserve.

Grabaseat international auctions run each Thursday, with a range of airfares auctioned off for $1 reserve. Over the past 10 weeks every single long haul route operated by Air New Zealand has been featured.

This week, more than 350 seats from New Zealand to Air New Zealand’s six Tasman, seven Pacific Islands and 10 long-haul destinations will go on sale from 7am, with the auction to run for approximately 24 hours.

Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Rob Fyfe says it will be the first time that Air New Zealand has offered flights for sale with a $1 reserve to its entire international network.

“Customers have an amazing opportunity to get some ultra cheap airfares in the current economic climate – it’s great that they could get to Tokyo or Los Angeles for less than the price of a wide-screen TV,” he says.

Mr Fyfe says grabaseat’s international auctions have proved hugely popular since they were launched late last year, with thousands of people signing up for an account with partner site Sella.co.nz in order to bid.

“On average the auction sells for less than half price, with the best deal so far going to a lucky punter in Wellington who scored four return tickets to San Francisco for around $575 return per person, or 23% of the retail value of the flights. Some auctions have been for ultra last minute travel - for example the auction closed on Friday morning with the successful bidder flying out to Los Angeles the next day with just enough time to pack their toothbrush!”
