Sand sculptures for Himatangi Beach
CREATIVE masterpieces are likely to catch the judges’ attention when entrants in the Himatangi Beach Community Trust’s sand sculpturing competition take to the seashore on Saturday (Feb 7).
Trust Chairman, Brian Rosvall, hopes the competition, which replaces the two “big digs” at the beach this summer, will become an annual event.
A ramp collection at the entrance to the beach during the competition will raise funds for future community projects.
“The event is open to anyone, especially families,” said Mr Rosvall, “and early indications are that there is quite a lot of interest. Let’s hope for a fine day.”
The competition, from 10am to 1pm, is on a section of beach on the Tangimoana side of the Kaikokopu Stream. Local and district businesses are donating prizes.
“It starts two hours after high tide, so the sand will be nice and wet to work with, and allows plenty of time for people to build their masterpieces without worrying about the incoming tide,” said Mr Rosvall.
