2009 Silva Superseries Orienteering - Race 5
Friday, 6 February 2009. Waitangi Day. Round two of the 2009 Silva Superseries Orienteering, a Sprint race at Massey University, Palmerston North, featured wins by Oceania Sprint Champions Jamie Stewart and Lizzie Ingham.
Fast running and confident navigating around the campus buildings and paddocks by Stewart gave him a narrow win of fifteen seconds over emerging junior talent Jourdan Harvey (Northerners), with Darren "Flash" Ashmore (Central Magic) in third.
Stewart (Bivouac Southerly Storm) has been unbeaten over the Sprint orienteering distance in 2009, and looks to specialise. "A lot can go wrong over the longer distances; my focus this year is on the short intense races and so far it's going well" he said.
His second win of the Silva Superseries catapults Stewart into the top six with eight races remaining, two of which are sprints.
Series leader and World Adventure Racing Champion Brent Edwards hangs onto his lead with a solid fifth place while Auckland based Southerly Storm's Michael Adams moves into second overall.
Lizzie Ingham (Herd Homes Central magic) consolidated her lead in the Silva Superseries with a strong win by a minute from Rita Homes (Bivouac Southerly Storm) and Angela Simpson (MacNut Northerners).
Ingham looks set for an exciting international season, having placed in the top twenty at two previous Junior World Championships and convincingly grasped into the number one ranking in New Zealand.
Silva Superseries racing continues on Saturday February 7 and 8 in the Wairarapa pine forests and farmland over the Middle and Long distances.
