2009 Silva Superseries Orienteering - Race 7
Sunday, 8 February 2009.Three days of intense orienteering in the second round of Silva Superseries 2009 sees the series leaders still in front at the halfway point.
Lizzie Ingham, multiple Oceania Orienteering Champion and New Zealand #1 was in top form yet again, winning all three races over Waitangi Weekend at a range of distances from Sprint to Long.
Her almost-perfect score of 102 points leaves her virtually unbeatable, unless another elite wins all remaining seven races an unlikely event given Ingham's dominance this season.
Brent Edwards, current World Adventure Racing Champion maintained his lead although saw it reduced by two points as Darren Ashmore and James Bradshaw maneouvered into second and third place with consistent navigation at speed over the weekend.
A win on Sunday by former World Champion and 2008 series runner-up Carsten Joergenson saw him move into the top six overall.
"I was pleased with my run today" he said. " There were a few route choice options through the open terrain as well as into the controls. You also needed to watch your height on the steeps".
Carsten is likely to advance in the series at the next round at the National Championships in Woodhill Forest north of Auckland, where the tricky sand-dune navigation is reminiscent of Denmark, Carsten's former country of residence.
He was also impressed with the standard of junior elites competing for a place in the Junior World Championships as well as challenging for places in the Silva Superseries against the elites.
"They're all doing well and I hope they select a huge team this year to exploit all that talent" said Carsten, in his role of New Zealand High Performance Director for Orienteering.
The National Championships, consisting of Sprint, Middle and Long distance orienteering races, and round three of the 2009 Silva Superseries will take place over the Easter weekend 10 to 13 April.
