Works by Ralph Hotere and Bill Hammond, two of New Zealand’s most important artists, are helping send Linwood College students on a trip to China by having their works up for auction at Turners Car Yards in Christchurch on March 6.

More than 130 paintings and works by leading and emerging New Zealand and Canterbury artists will be up for auction to raise funds to send 20 Linwood College students and staff to China.

They will promote ties with Christchurch’s sister city Wuhan - and develop leadership skills and understanding of diversity in culture.

Linwood College auction organiser Tom Davies said he was thrilled that pieces by Hotere and Hammond would feature in the auction.

``This is the biggest art auctions of its kind in the South Island. Last year we raised $20,000.The auctioneer will be Ian Currie of Turners Car Auctions helped by Lorna Davies, a lecturer and author,’’ Davies said today.

``There is a common thread in many of the works this year, particularly in pieces by Paul Johns, Herb Foley, Bryan L'Estrange, Clare Reilly and Vivien Bishop, which are all urging protection of our native species and our precious land.’’

Prominent artists who have donated works include Dean Buchanan, Herb Foley, William Moore, Llew Summers, Clare Reilly, Max Podolski, Hamish Allen, Melissa Sharplin and Annabel Menzies-Joyce.

The silent auction at Turner’s Car Auctions starts next week (February 28) continuing through until the live auction which starts at 7pm on March 6.

Other auction artists include Ian Batchelor, Gavin Bishop, Vivien Bishop, Mel Brew, Chrissy Brook, Sheila Brown, Dean Buchanan, Nigel Buxton, Peter Carson, Sylvia Clapp, Stephanie Crisp, Petra Dellaca, Jude Eldridge, Colin Freeman, Justin Galligan, Clare Goodwin, Sam Harrison, Karin Hofmans-Lange, Christine King, Nigel Jamieson, Paul Johns, Mark Lander, Jenny Lee, Bryan L'Estrange, Georg Ludwig, Marian Maguire, Keith Morant, Nicole Pickard, Linda Pringle, Gaby Reade, Shaun Rennall, Barbara Robinson, Elizabeth Ross, Katie Ross, Alex Rutherford, Merv Sarson, Mark Soltero, Zita Waldron, Kathie Watson, Joanne Webber, Robyn Webster, Martin Whitworth and Zoe Wiseman .
