Families are invited to come along to Marfell Park this Sunday (1 March) and enjoy a fun programme of activities to celebrate Children’s Day.

Events include a treasure hunt, sports challenges, face painting and a bouncy castle, along with demonstrations of judo, gymnastics and rock ’n roll – plus fun children’s activities run by the Fire Service.

“The theme of the day is ‘talking and listening’,” says Acting Manager Community Development Mary-Anne Priest.

“Our aim is to help strengthen families through encouraging them to talk and listen to each other while taking part in activities together.”

Organised by the Marfell Combined Trust, New Plymouth District Council, Sport Taranaki, Tu Tama Wahine, the police and schools, the event will also launch the Busted Being Brilliant (3Bs) Award.

Each month, a student from Marfell Kindergarten, Marfell Community School or Devon Intermediate will receive a Busted Being Brilliant Award for contribution to the community.

“The award is about recognising our young kids for their gestures of kindness, helpfulness or thoughtfulness, and identifying them as role models in their community,” says Ms Priest.

“Anyone can be a leader in the community, regardless of their age.”

The Children’s Day runs from 11am to 2pm this Sunday, at the top end of Marfell Park.

Families can bring a picnic along, or buy healthy food and drinks on site (with proceeds going to the Marfell Combined Trust).
