Time is running out for members of the community to have their say about the draft ‘Sale of Liquor’ policy currently out for consultation.

The objective of the draft policy is to promote a safe drinking environment for Taupo district residents and visitors and minimise alcohol related incidents in line with the ‘Sale of Liquor Act’ and best practice. One of the issues being reviewed is the trading hours for bars. Council has provided a range of options for the community to consider which include: closing earlier, closing later, not closing at all, or introducing a one-way door policy after a certain hour.

To make a submission, simply go to www.taupo.govt.nz to download the draft policy and submission form or call 07 376 0899 for more information. Submissions close Friday 3 April, 4.30pm.

Mayor Rick Cooper is encouraging everyone in the community with a view on this to have their say. “Much like a jury considers all evidence in a court case, the Council will deliberate over all submissions before making a final decision. It will be a decision that is representative of our community and one that is aimed at making our district a safe and secure place for residents and visitors.”

Group Manager Environmental Services, Gareth Green says this is about Council taking a ‘proactive approach’ to liquor licensing. “We want to work with the industry to promote responsible drinking and behaviours so that people out in town can have a great night and make it home safe and sound.”

As well as reviewing the opening hours, Council is looking at introducing a requirement for licence holders to have a host responsibility policy in place.
