Maori Affairs Minister Dr Pita Sharples has expressed pleasure that responsibility for broadcasting matters within the Maori Affairs portfolio would rest with Associate Minister of Maori Affairs, Hon Georgina te Heuheu.

The delegations tabled in Parliament today include matters relating to the Maori TV Services Act, Iwi Radio Licence Agreements, Te Mangai Paho and the Maori Television Service.

Dr Sharples said the Ministers were committed to the active protection and promotion of the Maori language. Broadcasting, whether on radio or television, was a key element in this process.

Mrs te Heuheu said the cultural renaissance of the past 25 years had underpinned growing Maori self-confidence and development. She was delighted to be at the forefront of ensuring that continued.

As Associate Minister, Mrs te Heuheu will also have responsibility for work on enhancing Maori business performance, business facilitation and advice; responsibility in relation to the Maori Land Court and the Te Ture Whenua Maori Land Act.

‘I am also very pleased that Dr Sharples has included me in the priority areas of Whanau Ora, Maori tourism and the creative sectors,’ she said.
