With site clearance underway and about 20 employees already hired for management positions, a McDonald’s outlet in Dannevirke is becoming a reality.

The remaining roles will be hired towards the end of May, the company’s communications manager Kate Porter has confirmed.

Another 60-80 people are likely to be required for shift work, “depending on the shifts and the sort of work the local community puts their hands up for,” she said.

The 106-seat restaurant on State Highway 2 at the north end of the Dannevirke CBD will be of modern design similar in appearance to restaurants in Papamoa and Rotorua’s Fairy Springs. It will include a McCafe, an enclosed dining area and a children’s’ Playland that will be fully visible to their caregivers.

Work is expected to start on framing the restaurant in May with a late June/early July opening – weather permitting.

While the company has a nominated contractor for all its new sites there was the opportunity for local businesses to benefit from sub contractor work, Ms Porter said.

So why Dannevirke?

Traffic numbers and population are the answer. Dannevirke has a “steady population” of about 5500 urban residents swelling to 9000 in a 15 km radius, with some 9800 vehicles passing daily.

Mayor Maureen Reynolds said a McDonald’s restaurant would be a welcome addition and a new asset to the town.
