"The accident involving 30 cows from a farm in the Waikato this morning has served as a timely warning for farmers to ensure their stock are secured at all times," says Federated Farmers Dairy vice-chairman John Bluett.

“Clearly this accident, which occurred at 2am near Gordonton, could have been much worse and Federated Farmers is thankful no one was killed or injured. At night, the drivers involved would have had little warning until it was too late.

“I imagine the drivers and attending police are probably still shaken by this accident and the need to euthanize seven of the cows that were seriously injured.

“Federated Farmers reiterates the importance of ensuring farm stock are secured and gates shut. More so, for farms adjacent to busy roads. It seems commonsense, but this accident goes to show how one slip of concentration could have led to a more serious outcome.

“While this accident occurred at night, it also illustrates to all drivers how dangerous a collision with stock can be. During daylight hours, if drivers see farm animals on the road, it’s very important not to startle them by beeping horns. Let the animals go past you, follow behind them or drive at a crawling pace. If a farmer is around, just follow their instructions,” concluded Mr Bluett.
