Another step has been taken toward giving category A status to 18 monuments and memorials around the district.

Tonight (Tuesday) NPDC’s Policy Committee recommended that the council advertise its intention to add 18 monuments and memorials to the District Plan’s category A schedule.

The recommendation will be considered by the full Council at its 28 April meeting. If the Council approves the recommendation, the public will be able to submit their support or objections towards any of the sites being added to the District Plan.

The 18 selected for category A status are in Bell Block, New Plymouth, Lepperton, Okato, Waitara, Inglewood, Uruti, Tariki, Urenui and Ratapiko.

“The district has a rich history that should be remembered by future generations, and providing category A status to these 18 sites will help us retain our community’s memory,” says committee chair Heather Dodunski.

Category A status means the monument or memorial is subject to rules within the District Plan, thereby providing a level of protection to the heritage item.

The 18 monuments and memorials that will be included in the plan change are:

* Bell Block War Memorial, Devon Road, Bell Block.
* Boer War Memorial Fountain, Marsland Hill, New Plymouth.
* Lepperton Monument (War Memorial), Manutahi Road, Lepperton.
* Okato War Memorial, South Road, Okato.
* Monument to Rev John Whiteley and Others, Watson Street, NP.
* 57th Regiment Monument, Watson Street, NP.
* Waitara War Memorial, Memorial Place, Waitara.
* Frankley Road War Memorial, Frankley Road, NP.

* Urenui War Memorial, Takiroa Street, Urenui.

* Westown School War Memorial, Sanders Avenue, NP.
* Waitara Land War Memorial, McLean Street, Waitara.
