Christchurch City Council’s Target Sustainability programme has had a major success, with almost 100% of demolition waste from the new AMI Stadium stand development reused or recycled, instead of going to landfill.

Council Resource Efficiency Team Leader Kevin Crutchley said Target Sustainability consultants worked with stadium owner Vbase and its contractors, Prodirections and Southern Demolition, to ensure as much waste as possible from demolishing and rebuilding the East Stand was reused on-site, to prevent it from going to landfill and cleanfill sites.

“This has been hugely successful – 99.9% of the waste tonnage has been reused or recycled,” said Mr Crutchley.

The biggest win was through crushing and reusing the 6000 tonnes of concrete from the old stand, as the foundations, roads and car parks for the new development, while ensuring this aspect of the project was cost-neutral.

The seats were given to charity or fund-raising activities, or sold by Southern Demolition or via Trade Me, while the plasterboard was crushed and reused as a soil conditioner on farms.

Metal was sent to local scrap metal dealers for recycling, and treated timber was prepared for resale at the ECO Recycling Park.

“This is a ground-breaking success for a waste reduction project in Christchurch, and Vbase and its contractors are to be congratulated for implementing these initiatives.”

Target Sustainability is a Christchurch City Council initiative to work with businesses to reduce waste and become more energy and water efficient.

About 100 businesses have already joined or applied to join Target Sustainability’s free resource efficiency consultancy programmes, including eight national house building companies, 21 hotels, manufacturing firms and many small businesses.
