Across New Zealand and Australia, April 25 brings reflection, solemnity, realism and pride. This difficult mix of emotions gains public coherence through an old custom: the laying of wreaths.

Every year Stratford residents pitch in to create a number of wreaths which are then laid in the Hall of Remembrance on Broadway.

Stratford Mayor, John Edwards, says “I would encourage you to remember all those who fought for our country, this ANZAC Day. Anyone interested in making wreaths can come to the War Memorial Centre on Friday 24 May from 9.30am onwards. There will be some flowers there for you to use, or you can bring your own.” Morning tea is provided for participants.

“Those who prefer to drop off pre-made wreaths can do so between 1 and 2pm directly to the Hall of Remembrance,” John says.

Stratford will have a dawn service, RSA parade, and Civic Service for those who wish to show their respect. This year the parade starts at 10.30am.

“We should keep an awareness in our hearts of the sacrifice that others made on our behalf, that we may all enjoy the freedom that we do, today,” John says.
