Council takes action to manage pests
A rabbit control programme involving toxic bait is being rolled out to manage the rabbit population in problem areas at Five Mile Bay, Wharewaka, Secombe Park and Kinloch.
Taupo District Council has contracted Epro Ltd to address the problem of rabbits on Council and DOC reserves, with a programme starting on the 11th May and running through until the end of June.
John Ridd, Community Policy Planning Manager says, “We need to keep on top of the rabbit problem otherwise it becomes unmanageable.” “This is the kindest and safest way,” he added.
The exercise will be weather dependant as two consecutive fine days are required to ensure the bait does not degrade. Pindone, a low potency poison is used which breaks down easily and is hidden in a green cereal bait that is laid by hand.
It is recommended that children are not allowed in the areas unsupervised. Households in the immediate vicinity are being informed and the exercise will be widely publicised to ensure the public are aware of the risks. Signage will be erected in the areas and at entry points.
Dog owners are advised not to bring their dogs into sign-posted area’s over the next six weeks as they may become ill if they ingest the bait or rabbit carcasses. Vets and pet shops in the area have been advised and if any dogs do become lethargic or ill, owners should get them to the vets immediately for the effects can be reversed. Carcasses will be removed from public places daily.
Care will be taken when distributing the bait, to keep some distance from the foreshore so the bait doesn’t go into the lake. “Although there would not be any health risks, there are cultural reasons that need to be respected with regards to the lake,” says Mr Ridd.
