Orcon@home and Orcon@work broadband customers can now make their data allowances go further with the telco offering free data downloads from a selected range of popular New Zealand websites*.

From today, the Auckland-based telecoms company is offering zero-rated traffic from seven popular websites and the company’s own email servers. It plans to grow the list of sites in the future.

Orcon’s chief executive Scott Bartlett says the company recognises there is a real opportunity to promote the consumption of great local content, and make users’ data allowances stretch further.

“This is a great value add for Orcon broadband users, and something that really sets us apart. Streaming and downloading can rapidly chew through gigabytes of data – and this is a great advance for those who know that they can get the best of the NZ web delivered over their broadband connection.”

Current sites with zero rated traffic from Orcon are tvnz.co.nz, gamers.net.nz, biggie.co.nz, thealist.co.nz, georgefm.co.nz and the George FM live stream, the Orcon mail servers and Orcon’s own website Orcon.net.nz.

Bartlett says essentially any data used on the sites that make up the O Zone doesn’t count towards Orcon broadband users’ monthly data cap - it is ‘free data’. That includes any uploading, downloading, streaming, or just general surfing done on the sites. Orcon broadband customers who are on the Orcon@home and Orcon@work range of plans currently offered by Orcon automatically get the benefits of the O Zone, there is no need for them to do anything to enable it. Orcon customers who are on non-current or “legacy” plans will not receive unmetered access to the O Zone sites.

Orcon intends to expand the O Zone over the coming months by adding more of New Zealands favourite sites.

* Note: zero-rated data offer only applies to Orcon customers on current plans, as offered on the Orcon website. Customers on legacy plans will not receive zero-rated data.

Ends.
