Coming into the long weekend Council’s road safety team and Taupo Police wish everyone an enjoyable long weekend but also want to remind drivers to take it easy on the roads and be aware of the fatal five – the main cause of road crashes.

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs
  • Speeding
  • Dangerous driving
  • Not wearing your seatbelt
  • At risk drivers including those who are tired and fatigued

In 2008, 15 people died on our local roads and this year the number of fatalities is up to 12 already. The majority of these accidents have occurred on State Highways within the district. “Please, let’s not add to these statistics over Queen’s Birthday weekend – we want you to get home to your families safe and sound,” said Road Safety Coordinator Christine Hutchison.

Over the next month, Taupo District Council in conjunction with Taupo Police and NZTA will be running a billboard campaign reminding drivers to be aware of the fatal five.
