Council is taking a proactive stance with the management of stormwater around the district and has approved a draft stormwater strategy to go out for public review.

At a Council meeting earlier this week, a draft stormwater management strategy for encouraging industry best practise, was given the nod by Council to go out for public consultation. Council officers will liaise with a number of key stakeholders in the community to find out if they are on the right track with the draft strategy, designed to provide strategic direction for the management of stormwater.

“This strategy has been designed to cater for a variety of future climate scenarios,” said Infrastructure and Parks Group Manager Ted Anderson. “It will provide clear direction in terms of how Council manages the district’s stormwater systems to protect public safety, property and our environment,” he said.

The outcomes within the strategy will minimise the risk of flooding and aim to improve the quality of stormwater entering our lakes and rivers.

A series of roadshows around the district are being held for members of the public to find out more about stormwater management, ask questions and provide feedback on the draft strategy. These are being held:

· Mon 15 June, 4.00 - 5.30 at Mangakino Council offices

· Tues 16 June, 11 - 2pm at Taupo library

· Wed 17 June, 11 - 2pm at Turangi Library

If you would like to view the draft strategy or make a submission, go to www.taupo.govt.nz or call Council on 07 376 0899. Submissions close on Tuesday 30 June at 5.00pm.
