The Taupo Women’s Refuge received a $5,000 cheque from Eyeworks last week thanks to the Unison Taupo Lakers.

For winning the title of New Zealand’s Top Town, the Lakers were able to nominate a local charity to receive $5,000. The Taupo Women’s Refuge received this honour and a cheque was handed over last week.

Councillor Mike Downard, coach of the Unison Taupo Lakers said it was fantastic to be able to support a local charity in this way. “The Taupo Women’s Refuge was a great choice – they are not in the limelight a lot yet they play such an important role in our community providing women and children somewhere where they know they can be safe.”

“Knowing money would be donated to our charity was also a real incentive for the team to win,” said Councillor Downard. He thanked the Lakers for their significant contribution and team sponsor’s Unison: The Powerlines People for their generous support.

Spokesperson from Taupo Women’s Refuge, Pam McLeod acknowledged the huge effort that the team made to win. “I watched the show on TV and it looked really hard. On behalf of Taupo Women’s Refuge I would like to thank all of the team members for their efforts and achieving such a great outcome,” she said.

The refuge will be putting the donation towards acknowledging their hardworking volunteers, upgrading their telephone system so they don’t miss any calls and purchasing something for the house.
