Air New Zealand today welcomed Prime Minister John Key’s announcement that Auckland would gain a central place to celebrate and enjoy the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

“The Government’s commitment to developing infrastructure in Auckland that accommodates tourism growth and enhances the visitor experience is welcome news,” says Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Rob Fyfe.

“This development will become a critical component of the Rugby World Cup and beyond, providing much needed public space for Auckland and an additional tourism draw card should the purchase of Queens Wharf go ahead.

“The distinct possibility of a new international cruise ship terminal and convention centre, together with significant areas of public space and commercial development is just what Auckland needs to make the most of its waterfront assets.

“The government has called for Auckland to unite to bring this development to life and Air New Zealand will certainly be lending its support as one of the country’s leading tourism businesses.”
