Maori Party advocates what is right for tangata whenua
The Maori Party’s goal for Maori representation on the Auckland Council is only what is right for tangata whenua, for all Maori, for Auckland and the nation, according to Maori Party co-leader Dr Pita Sharples.
“Criticism of our approach by Shane Jones is very telling – it shows that Mr Jones is a master of compromise, and he will sacrifice principle if necessary,” said Dr Sharples.
“The Maori Party has advocated for two tangata whenua reps, because there are two major iwi groupings around Tamaki Makaurau. To have only one rep simply invited conflict and argument for the foreseeable future.
“While the Maori Party supports the Royal Commission’s recommendations that Maori have representation as of right, we did not bulldoze ahead with their proposals, partly as a result of advice from tangata whenua, who are working together, and with the Maori Party, to find a tikanga-based solution.
“Mr Jones’ criticism suggests he would take what is on offer, rather than advocate for what is right, on the basis that something is better than nothing. Of course, the Royal Commission’s rigorous process did not ensure government support for its other proposals,” noted Dr Sharples.
“I say it remains to be seen whether the alternative is nothing. There is widespread public recognition of the generosity of tangata whenua in the founding and development of the city of Auckland, and understanding and support for proper recognition at the Council table.
“This is a very contentious issue, and we respect that fact that the government is wrestling with serious issues of principle. The most valuable contribution we can make is to put the principles up front and fight for them, rather than cut a compromise deal and leave the issues to be sorted out by future generations of Aucklanders,” said Dr Sharples.
