PALMERSTON NORTH

Manawatu Gymsports Inc has successfully completed the Sport Manawatu Club Assist programme. Sport Manawatu has been working with the club for approximately 18 months to support them through a series of recommendations aimed at making the club a more vibrant, viable and sustainable organisation.

President of Manawatu GymSports Rosemary O'Donoghue recognises that although the Club Assist programme was a lot of hard work it was all worth it. “It has been a huge amount of work for the Executive, who are all volunteers, but it has certainly been worthwhile and leaves us now able to focus on the growth of our club with some exciting projects in the planning stages”.

Manawatu GymSports developed or improved several areas of the club including the club’s long term planning, code of conduct, acknowledgement and recognition of volunteers and succession planning for coaches and volunteers.

O’Donoghue explained that going through the programme helped their club with not only the motivation to be a better club but provided them with the process by which they could identify areas of improvement themselves. “What the process did was to help us focus our policy making and gave us the encouragement and motivation to see the changes through. Whilst drafting up policies we also noticed other policy and process areas which needed to be developed and we were able to develop these alongside the recommendations that had been made by Sport Manawatu”.

A function to celebrate the hard work and the achievements that the club has made is being held on Friday July 3. At that function the club will be presented with a certificate and a reference letter verifying the clubs achievement.

Club Assist Background

The Club Assist programme was developed by Sport Manawatu and neighbouring regional sports trusts in order to support sports clubs to improve their management and operational capability.

The Eastern and Central Community Trust support the delivery of the Club Assist programme in the Manawatu, Horowhenua and Tararua.

There are a number of areas the Club Assist programme focuses on such as a club’s leadership, planning, customer focus, sport delivery, people management and sport management.
