TAUPO - 4 July 2009
North Island Cross Country Championships - Spa Park
Christchurch doctor Andrew Davidson held out Auckland's Edwin Henshaw to win the senior men's title and Otago University student Rachel Kingsford outgunned race record holder Melissa Moon of Wellington for the women's title.
Heading into the final of three 3000m circuits Davidson and Henshaw were locked in a two way battle. However over the final 1000m Davidson dug deep into his reserves and made a break which he held to the finish.
Davidson aged 26 recorded 28m 31s for the 9000m, over a minute faster than his fifth placing last year. Henshaw was eight seconds back in second with Stefan Smith of Wellington holding out 2007 winner Sam Dobson for third.
Davidson said that he had an average run last year, so returned for a better result.
"I expected (Henshaw) to be the man to beat and my coach told me to sit back early and try on the last lap, and that's what I did,' said Davidson.
Kingsford had the measure of the senior women's field from the start, and was out on her own over the final lap. Her winning time was 18m 11s for the 5000m. Ten times former North Island champion Moon finished half a minute later in second. Chanel Williamson was third in 18m 47s.
Kingsford returns to Dunedin at the end of the week for the Otago championships on Saturday.
Moon who last competed at Taupo in 2003 was delighted with her run. The former world mountain running champion turns forty this year and does not class herself as a master.
"Maybe when I'm 45 I will go in the master races," she said.
The best of the masters were Tony Olsen of Hamilton with 20m 36s for 6000m, Colin Earwaker in the over 50's with a time of 21m 8s and Vicki Humphries with a record breaking MW45 5000m of 19m 10s.
Danielle Trevis of North Harbour set a course record of 14m 14s in winning the women's 19 4000m.
