Fundraising for Manawatu Athletes
In recognition of the vital role performance athletes play in our community, Sport Manawatu has established an online fundraising scheme for our international athletes.
It can be a financial struggle for athletes to compete internationally in their chosen sport. Often an athlete is reliant on financial assistance from their parents and other family members. Some even go to extremes, such as Auckland Taekwondo Olympian Logan Campbell’s recent “gentleman’s club” fundraising venture.
"Performance athletes play a significant role by both inspiring our next generation of sportspeople and helping to build community pride,” says Rachel Cheer, Sport Manawatu’s public relations and participation manager. “They act as ambassadors for the Manawatu when competing at international events so helping them financially to reach their goals and succeed on the world stage is of great importance.”
The Sport Manawatu Online Fundraising Scheme provides an opportunity for the athlete to raise some cash as well as raising their profile. Sport Manawatu will also promote the fundraising efforts of the athlete via the Sport Manawatu website, e-newsletters, and other means to help maximise financial support.
All funds raised will be transferred to the athlete at the end of the fundraising period less administration costs. Athletes who live within the Sport Manawatu region may qualify for the Online Fundraising Scheme when selected to represent New Zealand.
