New Zealand’s leading women’s cricketer players are attending winter training camps at New Zealand Cricket’s High Performance Centre at Lincoln over the next two weekends – as preparations start for the next Women’s World Cup in India in 2013.

An Emerging Players training squad of 18 players will be in camp at Lincoln this weekend [Friday 17 to Sunday 19 July], while a White Ferns training squad of 21 trains next weekend [Friday 24 to Sunday 26 July].
The inclusion of an Emerging Players squad is a new initiative by NZC, which White Ferns coach Gary Stead said would add depth to the player pool.

“The Emerging Players squad is about having an eye on the future. These are potential players in the next World Cup – and even the one after that,” he said.

“We have players as young as 15 in the group – although some of them have played State League cricket already. We’re aiming to develop depth and experience in some of the younger players and expose them to higher levels of the game.”

Included in the squad are six high school students – Brooke Kirkbride (Northern Districts), Kate Broadmore (Central Districts), Rosie Cox (Auckland), Natalie Dodd (Northern Districts), Maddy Green (Auckland) and Jess McFadyen (Wellington).

Stead said the White Ferns training camp next weekend marked the start of the build up to the 2013 World Cup tournament. The team’s experiences in finishing second at two world tournaments this year would help provide a focus for developing the squad over the next four years, he said.

“We achieved really well to get to the finals in both competitions – but we need to start looking at the reasons why we didn’t go all the way, and how we can improve” said Stead. “We want to start winning those big games.”

The training camp would include a focus on fitness and nutrition, as well as on technical skills including playing spin bowling.

Following this round of camps the two squads will return for specialist skills training from 7 to 10 August. Another round of winter camps would be held in September, with further skills training in October.
