Annual work stoppages decrease

Two work stoppages ended in the March 2009 quarter and twenty-two work stoppages ended in the March2009 year, Statistics New Zealand said today.

Stoppages in the March 2009 year involved 4,944employees, and losses of 8,588 person-days of work and an estimated $2.4 million in wages and salaries.

In comparison, the 26 stoppages in the March 2008 year involved 3,664 employees, and losses of 11,049person-days of work and an estimated $1.8 million in wages and salaries.

The two stoppages that ended in the March 2009 quarter were both complete strikes.

Eighteen completestrikes and four partial strikes ended in the March 2009 year.
