New Zealand Emerging Players have recorded their first win of the Emerging Players 2009 tournament in Brisbane with a five-wicket win over India in a Twenty20 match today.

NZEP won the toss and put India Emerging Players into bat at Sandgate. Opening bowler Hamish Bennett helped NZEP off to a great start, taking 3/20 in his four overs.  Tim Southee and Te Ahu Davis provided good support with the ball.

India EP came back hard at the New Zealand attack in the latter stages of their innings and also benefitted from four dropped catches, which enabled them to accelerate well at the end. India reached 154 for 5 in their 20 overs.

NZEP responded aggressively to the Indian bowling line-up, which included Indian Test spinner Amit Mishrah. Martin Guptill and Colin de Grandhomme put on 51 in 5.2 overs for the first wicket, setting up a solid platform for the innings.

Guptill made 27 off 19 balls, while de Grandhomme went on to top score with 60 from 45 balls. De Grandhomme also shared a 55-run partnership with Reece Young, who finished on 24.

NZEP's next game is a 50-over match against South Africa Emerging Players at the University ground on Wednesday [29 July].

Short scorecard:
India Emerging Players: 154/5 in 20 overs (Tiwary 51, Nayar 45, Ojha 26; Bennett 3/20)
New Zealand Emerging Players: 156/5 in 19.0 overs (de Grandhomme 60, Guptill 27, Young 24; Kulkarni 3/29)
