Textiles Meet Mythology and Jewellery

Toi Poneke's next exhibition, entitled Thought and Memory, will delight gallery visitors with a stunning array of work - and it'll also be a great opportunity to pick up some fabulous jewellery designed and made by locals.

Vaune Mason, Annie Collins and Kathryn Yeats, some of whom have previously dazzled Toi PMneke Gallery attendees with their work, will kick off their exhibition on 17 August with a vast assortment of jewellery, textiles and sculpture.

Vaune says all of the works explore ideas surrounding gender, mythology and storytelling.

"We've designed a hybrid of jewellery installations, video and performance to create an innovative gateway for gallery visitors to explore contemporary jewellery," she says.

Vaune describes herself as a jeweller and object maker. Her pieces are rich in detail and narrative. She is increasingly becoming inspired by performance, the body and the exploration of emotion.

Kathryn Yeats focuses on infusing tactile and beautiful jewellery with narrative - her ideas are heavily influenced by her study of material history, culture and science.

Annie Collins has been producing work under her jewellery label 'Buster Collins' for two years. She works full time as a jeweller and jewellery teacher. All three of the artists are graduates of the Jewellery Diploma at Whitireia Community Polytechnic.

Two artist talks will feature a special performance by emerging choreographer and dancer Aly Firbank - inspired by the jewellery on display. These events will take place 6.00pm - 7.00pm on Tuesday 25 August and 1 September.

Thought and Memory will open at 5.30pm on Friday 14 July and run until Friday 4 September at Toi PMneke Gallery, 61 Abel Smith Street.
