Nominations are now being called for this year’s Christchurch Civic Awards.

These awards recognise the people who give so much of their time and effort to the community, encouraging the recipients to continue their outstanding efforts to bring about positive change among people in the community.

Acting-Mayor Norm Withers said: “We need to do all we can to promote the values of civic-mindedness in our city. These values have proven to be fundamental to the success of most great cities in the world today. They can take many forms: upholding the rights of others, service above self, or contributing toward community-building through outstanding service and achievements.”

A community is more than simply its physical environment; it's about people all working together to make something bigger than just the sum of themselves. In every community there are individuals who excel.”

“They give of themselves in a way that is often never acknowledged and the Civic Award is the highest award that we as a city, can give them. It’s a very special ceremony and their families and those who have nominated them are invited to one great night of celebration.”

Any individuals or organisation can be nominated for an award. Categories include recreation, youth activities, social welfare, educational services, cultural affairs, religious studies or any other substantial service, usually of a voluntary nature, that helps to further the vision of Christchurch outlined in the Council’s long-term community plan.

Successful nominees will receive a framed certificate and boxed medallion from the Mayor at a civic reception in late November. Nominations close on Monday 7 September 2009.

Ï Nomination forms are available from Council Service Centres, Christchurch City Libraries, Civic Offices, and www.ccc.govt.nz/community/awards or by phoning 941- 8251 or 941- 6332, for one to be posted.
