Franklin District Council has approved three new speed limit changes for Franklin. The speed decreases will take effect on 17 August 2009 at Grahams Beach, Buckland and Patumahoe.

The speed limit changes are;

Grahams Beach Road between Andrew Pye Road and the existing 50kph zone has been reduced from 100kph to 80kph.

Patumahoe Road from 100m south-east of Carter Road (the end of the existing 50kph zone) to a point 400m south east of Sedgebrook Road has been reduced from 100kph to 70kph.

Logan Road in Buckland, north of Buckville Road has been reduced from 100kph to 80kph.

Franklin District Council GM Works and Services Barry Bergin says that speed limit reviews are often undertaken as a result of requests from residents or road users.

“The recent speed limit reductions in Grahams Beach, Patumahoe and Buckland have stemmed from community input. Council investigated these and largely supported the speed reductions.”

Franklin District Council sets speed limits under the Speed Limits Bylaw 2005, allowing for Council to make additions or alterations to speed limits.

Speed limits across New Zealand are set in accordance with the Speed Limits Rule to ensure they are set appropriately and consistently. The presence of side roads, vehicle crossings, businesses and schools are part of the appropriate speed limit assessment.

Council has notified the Board of the New Zealand Transport Agency and the New Zealand Police of the new limits.
