Air Quality – Hastings & Napier

In July there were four air quality exceedances in Hastings and three in Napier.

The exceedences were on July 4 in both Hastings and Napier, July 16 in Napier, July 17 & 27 in Hastings and July 28 in both Hastings and Napier.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council monitors air quality for the National Environmental Standard (NES) for particulate matter (PM10) which sets a limit of 50 micrograms per cubic metre (24 hour average).

So far there have been nine exceedances in Hastings this year and three in Napier (to end of July). All have been during winter as domestic heating woodburners are the main cause of smoke in the air over the main cities.

The monitoring sites are located at Marewa Park in the Napier airshed, and St John’s College in the Hastings airshed.

Current monitoring results and other air quality information is available at www.hbrc.govt.nz.
