Nominations are being accepted for the annual Shirley/Papanui Community Board and Rehua Marae Heritage Awards.

The Heritage Awards recognise individual and group effort by those who have made significant contributions to the preservation of heritage in the Shirley/Papanui ward.

Nominations for the awards, with the theme Nga tapuwae o matou …Footsteps of our Ancestors, close Friday 28 August 2009.

“It is a celebration of our strong historical roots and the significance of our history in a very positive way. Through their contributions, award recipients inspire others to be involved in the preservation and conservation of heritage at a local level,” says Shirley/Papanui Community Board Chair Yvonne Palmer.

“Maintaining and understanding our heritage ensures that people thrive in a healthy, productive, creative, critical and self-reflective community. In doing this, we take our social structures, values, culture and institutions from the past and enable them to be enjoyed now and in the future,” says Mrs Palmer.

This is the eighth year of partnership between the Board and Rehua Marae, the multi-tribal and multi-cultural marae at Springfield Road comprising the wharenui representative of all the tribes in New Zealand.

The Rehua Marae Trustees were proud to work in conjunction with the Board on the Heritage Awards for 2009, says Secretary of Rhua Marae, Dr Terry Ryan.

“This is a great occasion to acknowledge the efforts of so many people who genuinely wish to preserve the history, the architect and the culture of previous generations in the preservation of their homes.

“Of recent years, I realize too, the importance of involving our youth in these discussions, in this case the children of the Papanui High School. They are the ones who will further this valuable cause into the future, which will ultimately benefit, culturally for all, all within our city of Christchurch,” says Dr Ryan.

The recognition scheme focuses in the following categories.

Heritage Retention - a heritage building, place or object which has previously been under threat of demolition or loss but has been secured for the future by either private or community initiatives in the last 12 months.

Caretaker Award – Heritage Maintenance and Conservation - recognises property owners or tenants who have appropriately maintained an item or place of cultural heritage value in as near as is possible and practicable to the original form and use of the building, place, or object.

Heritage Development - recognises work where a significant development (such as additions, additional buildings, or buildings and landscape changes within a heritage site), has ensured a compatible or continued use of the heritage item/place.

Heritage Education and Exploration - initiatives undertaken by individuals or community groups to research, promote and/or communicate the heritage of their Community Board area.

Heritage Involvement – Children and Young People - aimed at raising the heritage awareness and understanding of the young and encouraging them to be proactive within their local environment.

Maori Heritage - recognises the tangible and intangible heritage of significance to Tangata Whenua and its continuing protection for the community.
