New Zealand A will be backing themselves later today to defend a total of 280 after day one of their second tour match in India.

The New Zealanders won the toss and elected to bat first against a Tamil Nadu Cricket Association XI in Chepauk, Chennai.

Almost all the batsmen got off to good starts and spent valuable time in the middle, but with wickets falling steadily through the day the New Zealanders never fully dominated the local bowling attack, on a used, turning wicket.

Jamie How top scored with 44, with Neil Broom, 40, BJ Watling, 38, and Kane Williamson, 31, the other main contributors.

New Zealand A: Redmond, How, Fulton, Watling, Williamson, Broom, Hopkins, McGlashan, McCullum, Mills, Diamanti. Note: Shane Bond is suffering a stomach upset and did not play.

Short scorecard:
New Zealand A 280 all out in 89.5 overs (How 44, Broom 40, Watling 38, Williamson 31, McGlashan 28, McCullum 23; Shah 4/69)
