TARANAKI

Pro surfer Paige Hareb is putting her weight behind this year’s Keep New Zealand Beautiful campaign.

“Because we live here and get to enjoy the great landscape, we have the chance to make a tangible difference to the local environment by taking part in Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week,” she says.

“It only takes a couple of hours, and we can make a big difference to our local beaches, parks and other public areas. When I was at primary school we always took part in beach clean-up days and it was pretty fun doing it with everyone, and you also felt good after doing it as well.

“So I really hope to see families, businesses, sports groups and friends clubbing together to adopt a public area and get it clear of rubbish for Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week.

“We should be proud of our country and look after it,” she says.

The week runs from 4 to 11 September, but people who are interested in taking part should register with NPDC by 5pm on Friday 28 August by phoning 06-759 6060.

Manager Parks Mark Bruhn says the volunteers can choose which public space they want to adopt for the clean-up, and they will be provided with rubbish bags and gloves for the event.

“People can choose a place that means a lot to them – such as a walkway, a playground or a length of roadside – and we’ll organise for the collected rubbish to be disposed of,” he says.

“Local people respond really positively to this event because they can see an immediate change when all the litter is removed from their chosen public place.”

Keep New Zealand Beautiful is sponsored by New World supermarket.
