The North Otago Museum is counting down the days until 28 August; Janet Frame’s birthday. On that day the Museum will unveil its new display, looking at the relationship New Zealand’s most renowned author had with Oamaru, her “Kingdom by the Sea”.

“The Janet Frame Literary Trust have kindly loaned some of Janet’s most treasured possessions for the exhibition” says museum curator Ian Wards. These include the chanter from her father’s bag-pipes and a glass jelly dish. “In developing this display I’ve had the rare luxury of allowing the subject to write the labels. All of the objects on display relate to, or are mentioned in, Janet’s writing”.

The Janet Frame Eden Street Trust is also commemorating Janet Frame’s birthday with a writing workshop and “an evening of literary brilliance and sparkling repartée” featuring author and critic Kate Camp. The latter will be held at the Oamaru Opera House on Saturday 29 August at 8pm. Tickets are $15.
