Damaged river pathway to be repaired
Work to repair slip damage to a section of the Waikato River pathway in Hamilton, is set to begin in early Summer.
The path, between Bryce St and London St (Kirikiriroa Reserve) was badly damaged in heavy rain, last winter.
The steep terrain meant the redesign work was complicated and it will cost $720,000 to fix.
General Manager Works and Services Chris Allen said the repair cost has been assisted by a $360,000 subsidy from the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) emergency works fund, recognising the importance of the link in the city cycle network.
“Council is pleased to receive this funding which will allow work to start in early summer, taking full advantage of the favourable weather.”
“It is both a complicated and expensive repair job, requiring detailed geo-technical work, but one which is considered a priority.”
The damaged section of the walkway is part of the Waikato River pathway which is popular with walkers, runners and cyclists.
Council’s Transport Committee made a recommendation full Council approve the remaining funding and the tendering process has started.
