TAUPO

Most cars trapped on the Napier Taupo Highway have now been recovered and SH5 will be open later tonight (Tuesday 6 October) - hopefully before dark

Motorists who have been queuing at roadblocks at either end of State Highway 5 will need to remain patient for a little while longer, but it is likely the road will open later tonight before dark.

Police will provide an escort from both ends of SH5 to ensure the convoy of cars travelling along the road proceed safely and with caution to their destination.

Civil Defence Controller Joe Mickelson says it has been a long hard day but everyone has worked together to ensure we get the stranded vehicles moving and allow people to get their lives back on track, “there were a lot of very relieved people who have been through a tiring and stressful couple of days and nights, we wish them well on their way and hope their stay in Taupo, though unplanned, had some positive moments.”

There are still four vehicles that have not been claimed which are being removed so the road is completely clear. The vehicles will be stored in Taupo until owners can be located.

At the time of this release, the Desert Road remained closed. Motorists should keep an eye on the weather and check roading websites for updates: www.transit.govt.nz or www.aaroadwatch.co.nz
