When it comes knowing what men want in a great shaving experience Gillette seems to have all the answers - more than 600 million men around the world trust their faces to Gillette every day.

Based on Gillette’s deep understanding of men and their requirements and inspired by the science of shaving – Gillette has taken the next step in offering a total shave experience and introduced its first ever range of pre and post shave skincare products designed for men’s core needs.

Dermatologists have long known about the benefits of a pre and post shave skincare regime. According to leading New Zealand dermatologist Dr Mark Gray, more male patients are proactively seeking advice on how to treat their skin during the shaving process and which products are best to address their skin issues.

“Although men have become more sophisticated regarding their grooming routine, I think simple is best when it comes to the pre-shave, shaving and post-shave process,” Dr Gray says.

The newly developed range includes products to help prepare, shield and refuel, bringing outstanding skincare to Gillette’s winning portfolio.

1. Prepare

Dr Gray believes preparation plays a critical role in elevating the shaving experience. “I recommend washing the face with a mild, soap-free cleanser, as ordinary bar soap may dry the skin of its natural moisture. An exfoliating cleanser, such as those containing small beads, may be beneficial for men with oilier skin”.

The new Gillette Series Pre-Shave Scrub prepares the skin and facial hair before shaving to help give you a close, comfortable shave. The lathering formula with exfoliating micro-beads powers away dirt, oil and dead skin cells, helping to release trapped hairs prior to shaving.

The non-drying, soap-free formula in the new Gillette Series Pre-Shave Wash helps to clean away dirt and excess oils, while softening the facial hair.

2. Shield

“Many men may not recognise the importance of shave gel for the closeness and comfort of their shave. In reality, the right shave gel can make the difference between a good shave and a great shave,” says Dr Gray.

A range of Gillette Series Shave Gels has been developed to help protect the skin against nicks, redness and tightness during the shaving process. There are four variants to meet men’s different skin needs, each containing lubricants to enhance razor glide from the first stroke to the last.

3. Refuel

“Men’s skin is typically coarser, thicker and greasier than women’s. A light, non-greasy formula works well for men to help restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier,” Dr Gray says.

Designed to rehydrate the skin after shaving, the Gillette Series After-the-Shave Moisturizer is non-greasy, quickly absorbed and contains lightweight conditioners and emollients to help restore the skin’s moisture barrier and reduce tightness. It is alcohol free and suitable for everyday use. A version with SPF 15 UV protection is also available.

The lightweight blend of conditioners in the Gillette Series After-the-Shave Balm calms just shaved skin, leaving it smooth and comfortable.

Basic grooming tips to help elevate your shave:

· Shower or bathe before your shave. Washing your face and neck with warm water and a mild cleanser will help remove the natural oils and perspiration that inhibit water penetration. While facial hair can be tough, applying warm water will cause the hair to expand, making it softer and easier to cut. The force required to cut beard hair can be reduced by up to 70 percent after a two minute application of warm water.

· Apply plenty of shave gel. While water is the essential softening agent, the water absorbed by hair quickly evaporates leaving the hair in its original rigid state. Shave gel provides a protective blanket that helps prevent the evaporation of water and keeps the hair soft during the shave.

· Use a fresh blade and shave hard to reach spots last. To achieve the best shave it is important that your blade isn’t dull. If you start to feel the razor drag along your face, it’s time to replace it. Also ensure that you shave the cheeks, side of the face and neck first. The toughest hairs grow on the chin and around the lips. Shave these areas last, as more time soaking in shaving gel will soften the hair further.

· After the shave. After shaving, rinse your face and neck with cool water and pat dry. Always use an after-the-shave preparation to help hydrate and soothe the skin.
