Maori Party congratulates world-famous adult educator

The Maori Party today offered warm congratulations to Sandi Morrison of Tainui and Te Arawa on being the first-ever New Zealander to be inducted into the International Adult and Community Education Hall of Fame.

“This is well-earned recognition for a lifetime of work in continuing education,” said Co-leader Dr Sharples. “Sandi has a huge track record of achievement in New Zealand and around the world, including working in the poorest and most marginal communities.”

“She has brought her Maori and indigenous perspectives to the task, and opened out culturally diverse approaches to adult learning,” he said.

Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell said “Sandi also has a proud record of advocacy for adult and continuing education at the national and international levels. She has chaired a national advisory committee to the TEC, and been a South Pacific rep and Chair of the Asia South Pacific Association for Adult and Basic Education.

“Sandi is passionate about adult and continuing education, she knows it can turn lives around. Directly and indirectly, Sandi has made a huge difference to many people,” he said.

“This induction to the International Hall of Fame must be a proud moment for her, her whanau and her many colleagues in the field. We congratulate them all for their contribution to this great recognition for a great achiever,” said Dr Sharples and Mr Flavell.
