Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker is encouraging the city to get behind Canterbury this weekend as they take on Wellington in the final of the Air New Zealand Rugby Cup.

In a repeat match of last year's final, the 2008 Air New Zealand Cup winners Canterbury prepare to take on Wellington, following an outstanding win over the Hawke's Bay Magpies in the semi-finals in Christchurch last week.

Mayor Bob Parker says he believes that Canterbury are strong enough to bring home the cup yet again to add to the local trophy cabinet this Saturday.

“Canterbury has been achieving some incredible performances recently, including demolishing Wellington 36-14 in the Ranfurly Shield and their courageous win against Hawke's Bay last weekend.

The Canterbury team is exceptionally talented and the players are really determined to win the Air New Zealand Cup for the South Island, Bob Parker says.

“ Although we lost the Ranfurly Shield to Southland if we had to pass it on to another team, it couldn’t have gone to a better home for the summer. It would be great if we can win on Saturday night and ensure that these two major rugby trophies stay in the South Island this year. With such recent success, I am sure our professional young team will secure another great performance this weekend.

“Let’s all show our true Canterbury colours by getting behind our home team this Saturday and supporting Canterbury in winning the NPC final. This is domestic rugby at its best”

Canterbury will take on Wellington in the NPC final at AMI Stadium at 7.35pm this Saturday 7 November.
