Easier Access Coming for Paritutu Rock
The climb up one of New Plymouth’s coastal landmarks is about to get easier – for about half the way at least.
Tenders have gone out for the construction of an easy walking track from the car park beneath Paritutu Rock to a viewing platform half way up the rock.
However the climbing track from the platform to the 153m summit will remain as it is for those who still want a challenge.
“This upgrade will more clearly define the skill level needed on each section of the track,” says Manager Parks Programmes Steve McGill.
“Those who aren’t so confident about climbing steep slopes with the help of a cable can still enjoy the views from half way up Paritutu, while those who are agile can continue on to the summit.”
The improved track will follow the existing route, with sections of steps overcoming obstacles such as large rocks. The track will be built to the National Walking Standard’s ‘day-tripper standard’ giving reasonable accessibility for an able-bodied person.
In addition, the summit’s barrier will be improved.
Work is scheduled to take place in February and March next year, and will require periodic closure of the track during construction. More information about track closure times and dates will be released closer to the construction period.
Paritutu and the Sugar Loaf Islands are the eroded remnants of an ancient volcano, dated to approximately 1.75 million years ago.
