NORTH SHORE
Nikki Hamblin, semi-finalist in the 1500m at the world championships in Berlin in August, recorded 2m 18.44s over 800m at the Bays middle distance meeting at Sovereign Stadium last Tuesday evening. In extremely windy conditions, Jenny Hauke, paced by Hamblin, was second in 2m 19.08s.
Hamblin then turned round and paced the 3000m, which she won in 10m 52.20s. Anna Bramley was second in 10m 52.36s with Samantha Blanch third in 11m 00.40s.
Jason Stewart paced the men’s 800m field which was won by Josh Tatley in 1m 57.56s. Julian Harris was second in 1m 58.36s with John Schreuder third in 1m 59.10s. Lewis Jenkin paced the men’s 3000m won, in a sprint finish, by Michael Banks in 9m 00.78s, from Sam Morreau 9m 01.17s and Reid Hunter 9m 07.47s.
Hamblin will next compete at the Sovereign Stadium on 16 December over 5000m where Danielle Trevis will be seeking a world junior championships time of 16m 30s. Hamblin will follow this with a 3000m at Tauranga on New Year’s Day.

AUCKLAND
Battle of the Cities – Round three, Mt Smart Stadium
Portia Bing came through the third round of the Battle of the Cities competition with victories in the women 16 100m hurdles, javelin throw and long jump.

Competing for her North Harbour Bays Club the 16 year old recorded 14.57s (+0.7) in the hurdles, threw the javelin 32.54m and jumped 5.71m (+1.5).
This coming weekend Bing will be taking part in the North Island combined events championships in Hastings where her coach Russ Hoggard believes she has every chance of setting a New Zealand W16 heptathlon record.
“If Portia can duplicate today’s performances there is every chance she will get the record and may even give the world junior championships standard a nudge,” said Hoggard.
The standard for a national record is 4800 points and to get to the world junior championships in Canada next year the performance standard is 5150.
In two weeks time Bing will be competing for her Baradine College at the New Zealand secondary schools championships in Timaru in the senior girls’ 100m hurdles, long and high jumps.
Jacko Gill of Takapuna, who set a New Zealand M16 and M17 shot put record of 19.72m in New Caledonia last month, won the M16 shot put with 19.63m.
National women’s 10km and 15km road walking champion Alana Barber won the 3km track walk in 16m 52.19s.
Carl Van der Speck dominated the senior men’s 100m winning in 10.42s (+3.6), but was unable to match this in the 200m won by Jeffrey Thumath in 21.15s (+1.3). Thumath also won the long jump with 7.51m (+3.1).
Nicholas Gerrard in the M19 long jump cleared 7.10m (+2.6).
Peter Callagher was in fine form in the M19 110m hurdles winning in 14.38s (+2.7).
Jono Jackson, with what is becoming his trade mark sprint finish, ran a personal best 3000m in 8m 29.82s, out kicking Alex Parlane over the final 200m. Parlane also ran a career best of 8m 33.15s. Thirteen year old David Lee finished a creditable fifth in 9m 16.98s.
Michael Eggleton from Hamilton had a close finish with Matthew Morreau in the M19 800m narrowly winning in 1m 58.79s.
Johan Smalberger had the javelin out to 69.23m.

WELLINGTON
Regional Teams Competition Round three, Newtown Park
Ryan Tinkle highlighted the M19 throwing events winning the shot put 14.90m, discus 49.11m and hammer throwing 62.66m, just under 5m short of the standard for a NZ M19 record. Leesa Lealaisalanoa threw 41.65m in the W16 discus. Shaka Sola was out to 15.53m in the shot, Tim Hawkes triple jumped 13.02m (+1.9), Scott Thomson was out to 13.24m (+0.2) in the M19 TJ and Melody Stein cleared 11.53m (-1.5) in the W16 TJ. Billy Crayford was over 2.00m in the HJ, Keeley O’Hagen jumped 1.75m in the W16 HJ. Nick Kalivati clocked 55.98s in the 400m hurdles. Hamish Carson scored a PB in the 3000m in 8m 28.88s while Rory English won the M16 3000m in 8m 47.47s. Olivia Burne won the W19 1500m in 4m 36.86s from Caroline Mellsop 4m 37.74s. Nathan Barrett M19 1500m in 4m 7.08s from Kieron McDonald M16 4m 9.52s. Brad Mathas came through the M16 800m in 1m 55.23s with the W19 800m going to Anna Roche in 2m 17.91s. Glen Matushka won the M16 400m in 50.02s. Michael Wilson took out the 200m in 21.3s (0.0) and the 400m in 49.88s. Zac Topping won the M19 sprint double in 11.21s (-0.4) and 200m 22.1s. Yarrid Rossario won the M16 100m in 11.28s (-0.4). The W16 100m went to Emma Blake in 12.76s (+1.5) as well as the 200m in 26.08s (-0.5). Phillipa Symes won the W19 100m in 12.45s (+1.5).

From the meeting the previous week 21 November Kellie Palmer won the 3000m in 9m 36.28s. Keeley O’Hagan was out to 5.54m (+1.6) in the W16 long jump while Ryan Roselli cleared 7.00m (+1.8) in the SM long jump. Rachel Kemp was over at 3.30m in the SW pole vault, Richard Thomson won the SM shot put with 14.13m, Peter Baillie recorded 15m 38.45s in the 3000m walk and Scott Thomson in the M19 triple jump cleared 12.68m.

NELSON
Allcomers meeting: Alex Jordan 100m 10.8s and 49.3s over 400m. Edwoud Noordeloos M19 1500m in 4m 10.6s. Andrew Moore long jump 6.45m.

CHRISTCHURCH
Rebecca Hodgson of South Canterbury set a Canterbury W16 hammer record with a throw of 45.98m. Hodgson from Timaru Girls’ High School will compete in the senior girls’ hammer at the New Zealand secondary schools championships.
David Ambler won the 200m in 21.52s (+0.4), Fiona Morrison the senior 100m hurdles in 14.85s (-1.1), Sarah McSweeney W19 2km steeples in 7m 17.56s. Kelsey Berryman W17 100m hurdles in 14.82s (-1.1) and long jump 5.34m (+0.3). Nicki McFadzien W19 won the Canterbury women’s 10,000m championship in 35m 27.91s while Mikael Andersson won the men’s 10,000m in 32m 6.36s. 400m winners were Rebecca Wardell 55.86s, Abigail Watson W19 56.92s and Tim Jones 48.97s.
Angela Smit W18 800m in 2m 7.74s and Margot Gibson W15 2m 13.83s. Derick Lotz M17 800m in 1m 56.53s and Malcolm Hicks SM 3000m in 8m 32.72s.
Christopher Wiremu M16 long jump 6.31m (+0.4). Wiremu from Christchurch BHS will compete in the junior boys’ 100m, 100m H, long and triple jumps at the Schools Champs. Phil Simms of Hamilton won the M16 triple jump with 12.71m (-0.2).

DUNEDIN
Athletics Otago Meeting, incorporating Otago/Southland Meet
Rebekah Greene won the W16 1500m in 4m 33.26s and the 400m in 59.59s. Greene will represent St Hilda’s Collegiate in the senior girl’s 1500m and 3000m at the New Zealand secondary schools championships. Daniel Balchin also won the 1500m and the 400m in the M19 recording 4m 3.21s and 55.72s. Matthew Robinson won the M19 400m in 48.32s. Anna Smythe won the senior 100m in 12.06s (+1.9). Greer Alsop was out to 5.36m twice (+3.2 and +2.7) in the W16 long jump. After four fouls and a poor fourth round John Gilmour came through in the final round with a 6.69m (+1.8) in the M19 long jump, to beat Todd Swanson 6.47m (+1.4).

AUSTRALIA
Great Australian 15km Run – Melbourne 29 November
Kim Hogarth finished 14th in 46m 58s and Sam Dobson 21st in 50m 12s. The race was won by Austrian Guenther Weidlinger in 43m 1s from Australians Collis Birmingham 43m 19s and Martin Dent 44m 0s. Weidlinger took a bad fall in the 3000m steeplechase heats at the 2007 world championships in Osaka. Last month in Frankfurt he improved on the Austrian marathon record with his 10th placing time of 2h 10m 47s.
Beijing Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru of Kenya was fourth in 44m 20s. Wanjiru, 23, only arrived in Australia late Friday because of health problems with his daughter and said his tiredness had affected his form.
Kellie Palmer was 10th in the women’s race in 56m 13s. Australians took the first two placings Nikki Chapple winning in 50m 18s, from Benita Willis 51m 15s. British Olympian steeplechaser Helen Clitheroe was third in 51m 17s.

In the Victoria State 5000m championship in Melbourne on Thursday 26 November Jason Woolhouse was first in 13m 56.86s, with Shaun Krawitz sixth in 14m 24.09s.
