TIMARU

New Zealand Secondary Schools T&F Championships, Aorangi Park

Day one, Saturday 12 December

Tom Walsh of Timaru Boys’ High highlighted day one of the New Zealand secondary schools T&F championships in Timaru with a New Zealand M17 shot put record of 20.21m.

This bettered Jacko Gill’s recent M17 record of 19.72m set in New Caledonia in October, which had in turn broken Walsh’s record of 19.60m set in finishing sixth at the World Youth Championships in Italy in July.

Walsh won the senior boys’ shot put title with his record breaking effort beating Albert Nikoro of Mt Albert Grammar and Ryan Tinkle of Wellington College.

Tinkle had earlier won the senior boys’ hammer throwing 63.96m. Gill won the junior boys’ discus with a throw of 58.12m.

Not to be outdone, by Tom Walsh’s shot put effort on Saturday, 14 year old Jacko Gill from Takapuna Grammar came back on Sunday and won the junior boys shot put with the 5kg shot sending the ball out to 20.42m, immediately erasing Walsh’s New Zealand M17 record and also extending his own New Zealand M16 record.

Campbell Wu of Auckland Grammar set a New Zealand M16 300m hurdles record of 37.71s in winning the open boys’ event. This betters the standard for a record of 38s and is faster than Nic O’Brien’s time of 37.86s recorded at the schools’ championships in Wanganui in 1996.

Rachel Peeters of Mt Albert Grammar won the senior girls sprint double, while Hannah Newbould of Cashmere who has already qualified for selection to the world junior championships in Canada in July won the senior girls 1500m in 4m 29.14s. AUCKLAND

Mt Smart Stadium

Michael Cochrane scored a double surprise in the 400m hurdles on Saturday.

The 18 year old from Tauranga rocketed around the lap of the track and over the fights of hurdles in a personal best time of 53.10s. This time was also under the entry standard of 53.34s for the world junior championships in Canada in July, putting him in contention for selection.

“It is a huge surprise, I was thinking maybe a 55 seconds, but 53.1 seconds is pretty surprising,” said Cochrane.

Cochrane, second in the men 19 110m hurdles and third in the 400m hurdles at the New Zealand championships in Wellington in March, was delighted to cut over a second off his previous best of 54.08s.

“I have a big break coming up and we wanted to get a good race in, we weren’t expecting a PB, I’m not even peaking yet. So that felt good,” he said.

Cochrane also bettered the New Zealand M18 record of 53.87s, however Nic O’Brien has a faster time of 51.99s set in Belgium in 1998 awaiting confirmation.

Carl Van der Speck won the senior sprint double in wind assisted times of 10.43s (+4.2) in the 100m and 21.14s (+3.2) in the 200m. Jeffrey Thumath was second on both occasions in 10.51s and 21.33s. Junior sprinter Issac Tatoa made further inroads into the senior results beating James Dolphin over 60m in 6.85s (+1.4) and taking third ahead of Dolphin in the 100m in 10.60s.

Ryan Roselli, a visitor from Wellington won the long jump with an assisted 7.23m (+2.6). He also had a legal jump of 7.17m (+1.9).

Heptathlete Sarah Cowley won the 200m in 25.71s (+1.3) and the long jump with 5.72m (+2.1). Jessica Charlesworth had the hammer out to 50.80m while Rochelle Coster won the 100m in 12.20s (+2.7). Brooke Cowsill won the women’s 3000m track walk in 14m 44.51s.
