Two centuries dominate U19 opening day

AUCKLAND

Auckland and Canterbury recorded comfortable wins in the opening round of the National Under 19 tournament in Auckland today, with two players scoring centuries. Otago also secured first round points.

New Zealand U19 squad member Jimmy Neesham scored 172 for Auckland, who amassed 342 for 6 in their 50 overs, shutting out Central Districts who fell 197 runs short.

Canterbury’s Tom Latham, another national U19 contender, top scored with an unbeaten 111 as his side chased down the target set by Northern Districts, winning by eight wickets.

The match between Wellington and Otago was a closer affair, with Otago going down to the second to last over to score their winning runs.

Central Districts 144 (37.3 overs) (I Sodhi 3-25) by 197 runs

Northern Districts 189-8 (50 overs) (T Beehre 35, P West 3-35) lost to
Canterbury 196-2 (38.4 overs) (T Latham 111no, C McConchie 46) by eight wickets.

Wellington 238-9 (50 overs) (C Gajanayaka 58, R Pepperell 48, M Taylor 43, H Boam 39, B Soper 4-56) lost to
Otago 240-7(48.3 overs) by three wickets.
